Julia Campisi

Julia Campisi is an artist-research who addresses themes of place, memory, and utility by considering our relationship to civic space. Using construction motifs and tools as stand-ins, she considers cultural systems, physical labor and the structural logic embedded in built environments. Working across sculpture, installation, and photography, Campisi’s practice is highly tactile and intuitive and can even be understood as inherited. She use familial sensibilities and history as a prompt to anchor memory and meaning. Resin and acrylic are the core materials in her studio because, for her, they operate on a different temporal scale. Even if they yellow or degrade, they will persist far beyond organic cycles, closer to a kind of deep future or cosmic time. Ultimately Campisi is interested in creating conditions where viewers remain with a surface long enough for its histories, rhythm and embedded meaning to register. In this slowed encounter, surfaces shift from passive ground to active sites of exchange, where human action, material systems, and memory coalesce to register a place that continuously brings into view the conditions that shape who we are. Campisi holds a BFA from Toronto Metropolitan University and a H.B.A. from McMaster University and is currently completing her MFA at York University. Her work has been exhibited in over 20 galleries, both nationally and internationally and is held in private and public collections including the Ottawa Art Gallery and the Drake Hotel. She has participated in numerous national conferences and has received multiple grants and awards, including the Canada Council for the Arts Explore and Create Grant and the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship, Masters.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1015/5773/1609/collections/Screenshot_2026-07-26_at_2.05.00_PM.png?v=1785089129
